any ideas why i am burning oil?
My engine only has about 6k miles on it. I initially thought that the valve seals were leaking. So i decided on some new heads. Well, its still using a lot of oil. I assume that older cars do use oil more so than newer cars but im going through about a qt of oil in a full tank of gas depending on how i drive it. If im hammering the pedal it uses a lot. If i put put, then much less.
I did a compression test and they are all really good and consistant.
I notice mostly when im in 3rd or 4rth and i take it to about 5-6k rpms then shift, I get a big puff of smoke out of the exhaust.
Also, after I get on it hard from 1st thru 4rth, my lifters bleed down and i get really bad valve ticking for about 30 sec. until they pump back up.
I am running a high flow oil pump with a basically stock pan. Its stock but chrome.

Hi,
typically burning oil can stem from broken rings, or worn piston bores. In the case of a new rebuild, incorrect rings for the honing pattern, too tight of a gap (causing broken ring), or simply not "bedded in" yet. The choice in ring material will dictate the "bedding" process. Start-up smoke is typically worn valve guides as oil will slip down the sides of the guides and lay on top of the valves. When the engine is started, it's burned off.
Hope this helps.
Your compression test should have been taken using a screw-in style gauge, removing all of the plugs and blocking the throttle plates open and a warm engine. You will like to see all of the numbers to be within 10, maybe, 15% of each. You don't mention your results. Why?

I'm more concerned about the lifter problem. What is your oil pressure, hot, at 2000 rpm?
Have you done a dry/wet compression test? Since you replaced the heads and nothing changed, the problem is obviously the the block.
Define "a lot of oil". My daily driver (97 5.0) uses half a quart every 3000 miles. I consider that pretty good for 175,000 miles. My previous daily driver (now retired) was a 66 289HP. That one uses a quart every 3000. But then, it has about 200,000 on it.

OK, if I assume about 14 mpg, that's barely 200 miles per quart. Any randomly-selected used engine pulled from a wreck should do better than that. Back in college I had an engine that was a real smoker and it was upward of 1000 miles per quart. If he's truly burning a quart per tankful, we're not talking "a big puff of smoke" now and then, we're talking constant trail…

it doesnt appear bad. Thew only time you can actuqall see opil is if I have high RPMs and them let off to shift. even then it is not horrible, just a puff.
Im thinking about a qt in 400 miles when im on it hard. Otherwise less then half that if im just cruising. I think Im getting a little over 20mpg with the a/c off.
I dont have a oil pressure guage with actual #s on it. Just the needle with the H and L. It is about 3/4 to the high side!
when i did the compression test, all the cylinders were within 5 psi. If I remember correctly they were all about 185 PSI give or take!
