Automatic Shifter won't shift?

Just got my 65 Mustang back from the body shop where it got painted and they removed the engine (inline 6). So I was pushing it back into the garage and when I put it in park the car still rolls like it's in neutral. The body shop removed the engine, trans, and rear end. What could be causing it not shifting into gear? It's an automatic.

This may be a dumb question, but is the transmission back in it?

Yes it's back in, when I shift with the shifter in any position I can still push the car around as if it's in neutral.

the linkage is out of adjustment. loosen at the trans and move it manually to "parK, then tighten the linkage

another dumb question, is the driveshaft there?

I'll have to try that, never thought of that. Any pictures would also be great if anyone has any of the linkage. Yes the driveshaft is back in.

O.k. so i manually moved the shift shaft to park position and still the same thing, I aslo try putting it in other positions and still in neutral. Could this be a bigger problem like something internal?

Check your neutral safety switch

the neutral saftey switch is original..... could that not allow the transmission to switch? If so, if I remove it should the transmission switch then?

the nuetral safety switch has NOTHING to do with you issues.

Disconnect the linkage at the trans and jack up the rear wheels so they are off the ground.Move the linkage by hand on the trans and try to spin the drive shaft. that will tell you if its internal

o.k. i'll try that next, thanks! :)
