starter runs after I turn off and remove the key
My 1966 Mustang (298 V8 with auto trans) was running fine... I let it sit for two weeks, then tried to start it today. The starter motor turned, but the engine did not catch. When I turned the key back to off and removed it, the starter continued to crank the engine!
What is going on?
Mystified in Seattle...

Probably your relay got stuck. Tap it a few times then try again. If that wasn't it. Tap the solenoid on your starter. Try again.
If niether worked the one or the other is faulty. My guess would be starter.

I was having the same issue, kept cranking even after the key was shut off. After replacing the solenoid it ended up being the battery, it was on its way out and somehow the low cranking amps was holding the solenoid in after the key let off.

Thanks to all, especially oxfordbp. Tapping the starter motor seemed to free the solenoid. I rechecked the wiring (I've had to rewire much of the wiring harness due to severe hacking by the previous owner) and found a cut wire between the ignition coil and the "I" terminal on the starter relay.
After fixing that, the car starts fine.
Before I made the post, I had checked the ignition switch and the starter relay, should have mentioned that.
Again, thanks for the help!
