Default Dakota Digital Dash Fuel reading not accurate at all

When I bought my 68 mustang it came with a dakota digital dash which I really like. The only problem I have is the fuel reading is not accurate at all. I am assuming my car has a 16 gallon tank. At full the highest it has told me was 85%, but even lately at full it will tell me it is only 50% or 60% full. Is this something I just have to live with or should I remove the sending unit to manually set the levels with the float as the manual suggest? Anyone have any experience with these? I also see that Dakota digital offers an afermarket fuel sensor. Would this make the readout more accurate? I can be on a sloped drive way and it tells me I am at 0% and after sitting level for a while it goes back to 40-50%. Really like the look of it, but not yet knowing how far I can drive on a tank without running out of gas is frustrating.

It needs to be adjusted or it may not be working correctly.

I've yet to find a fuel sender that's actually accurate.
