Default Brake pedal travel

Now that my car is drivable, I don't like the way the brake pedal feels. It goes almost all the way to the floor, stopping about 1 1/2" from the floor. Gets very firm, but almost no braking until almost at the floor. It will barely lock the brakes, only at slow speeds.

I think they're bled properly. Any other possibilities?

They're either not bled, or you have a huge mismatch in master cylinder to caliper size.

What setup, and is the m/c new and was it bench bled?

Or the linkage is incorrect. Manual or power brakes?

Sorry, it is a manual CSRP Granada kit. I don't think there is any mismatch of parts.

The pedal is not soft at all, just seems to travel too far. I guess I'll bleed them again, for the fourth time.

Possible expansion of the hoses as well? Mine does that too and its still all drums.

Well, traveling far isn't necessarily a problem, depends on the calipers and m/c. With a smaller bore m/c you build pressure more easily and have less leg effort, but have to push the pedal farther to move the needed volume. Many race cars have setups like that, where if it's manual the pedal goes almost to the floor.

It can also be the brake adjustment if the backs (or fronts) are still drums. If not, along the same lines as 67mustang302 states-it's the amount of fluid required to engage the pad from pistons movement thru the caliper housing volume enough to stop. You should be running a disk brake MC if you didn't change it out. You may also adjust the MC input rod to engage the MC shuttle a little faster.

There is some wiggle room before the pedal starts pushing the rod, maybe 1/4" of travel. It is rear drum. What is a good starting point for the proportioning valve, I think I have it set in the middle of its range ...

Don't think there should be any wiggle room, it gets multplied by geometry.

I have Granada brakes in mine with a (unknown) later model Ford master cyl.
Have quite a bit of brake pedal travel before they bite. But it does catch pretty far off the floor.

Adjusting the rear brakes helped a lot.
Brake rod is snug in the back of the mst cyl.
