Default 351W Hood Clearance in 1968 Mustang

Have spent the last couple of months doing research on engines for my 1968 fastback. Originally looked at a 347 which would be a great fit but also considering a 351W based stroker. It seems a shame not to try and fill that wider engine compartment that Ford created with the 1967 models.

I had posted a couple of months ago about hood clearance with a 347 with an Edelbrock RPM Air Gap manifold and the responses I got was that there are no clearance issues for that combination.

I know that isn't the case when installing a 351W engine because of the taller deck height. I would appreciate any information you might have on your installation of a 351, 408, 427, etc. in a 67 or 68 Mustang with the stock hood. I'm pretty sure that you can't use the RPM Air Gap manifold but have no information on others intake manifolds. One 427 stroker engine I'm considering comes with the Edelbrock Performer RPM manifold but according to the information I could find, it's only about .25" lower than the Air Gap. I just want to make sure whatever manifold I choose will give me adequate hood clearance to use my stock hood.

Many thanks.

I have a 351W stroked out to 408. Edelbrock Performer RMP intake. MSD's Atomic EFI on top. All under a stock 67 hood.

I did end up installing Ron Morris adjustable motor mounts with a 1/2 drop, but I believe that was when I was dealing with air cleaner clearance issues, before I found one with a drop base dimension that worked. (its been a while, so I don't recall)

Many thanks for the information. As you mentioned, the engine with the Performer RPM manifold will clear the stock hood BUT you can only use specific air cleaners. If I go with a 351 based engine, will definitely consider using the adjustable engine mounts although that is another $260 expense for using the 351 over a stroker 302.

Lane automotive and Speedway (and others) carry a lot of different drop air cleaner bases. Granted, these are going to be 14" round type only since they are for circle track, but there should be one you can use. To get a big drop you may need to adjust your throttle linkage.
