65 289 seals leaking (Timing cover, rear main, transmission...) - looking for advice
Guys - first time poster here and looking for advice. Bought a mustang after an initial purchase inspection but finding more leaks as time goes on. Car and engine were completely rebuilt in 2005 but been sitting for the past 4 years so lots going on. Has the original 289 A code engine, but exhaust, transmission, carb, suspension etc. have all be rebuilt or replaced. Have a running list of leaks/gaskets that need some attention and trying to figure out whether its best to slowly address these over time or just bite the bullet and pull the engine to reseal it all. Not all of these are major concerns but seems to be long enough it may be worth pulling it all and resealing, but trying to gauge how big of an undertaking this is going to be. Thoughts?
Seals that appear compromised (in order of most biggest concern to least)
- Timing cover gasket leaking oil+ maybe coolant
- Rear main seal compromised, minor leak showing
- Oil Pan seal leaking; likely requires new gasket
- Valve Cover seal leaking; likely requires new gasket
- Transmission plate to engine leaking, likely require new gasket
- Transmission pan seal leaking; likely requires new gasket
- Left steering box gasket leaking, likely requires replacement
- Intake Manifold small leaking, check/replace seal
- Sway Bar seal small leak
- Steering small leak

If the oil pan is leaking then do the rear main and timing seals at the same time.
Drop the oil pan
The rear main is 2 parts remove the bottom half and push the top half of the seal out, replace. Should be plenty of youtube videos out to show more details
Pull the timing cover and replace the front main seal (again yt) and reinstall
Then reinstall the oil pan. The oil pan interferes with the removal of the front timing cover and covers the rear main its first off and last replaced.
