How much did your rebuild cost?
Hey everybody,
I have a 1965 Mustang with a straight 6 and 3 speed toploader. I just got it recently so I haven't done any work to it, and neither did the previous owner. I'm thinking of rebuilding the engine myself (or at least, as much as I can myself), but I didn't want to get too deep without getting an estimate of the cost.
Anybody that has attempted to rebuild their engine, how much did it cost? Also, my other fear is that I attempt to rebuild and then it never runs again. I don't want to put that much money into a rebuild if I don't get it to run again.
Any thoughts, ideas, and suggestions would be really helpful. Thanks!

Rebuilding an I6 yourself is pretty cheap, you can get a stock rebuild kit and all the other little stuff for probably under $2k at a parts warehouse, maybe even half that. Not sure what the stock rebuild kits run these days, but several years ago they were pretty cheap.

add another $600 - $1K for machine work. I wouldn't order your rebuild kit until you've pulled the motor and checked it to determine if you need to bore/hone the block, or if it's already been done. You never know until you've opened it up and measured it. Once you know what you're working with, and results of the machining, you can order the kit based on feedback from the shop: .030 over pistons, with a 10/10 crank, etc.
