How Do I Know The Mileage of My 65 Coupe?
Hi Mustang Forum!
I just bought a 1965 Mustang Coupe in Seattle. It has a straight-6 cylinder engine and automatic transmission. The engine and transmission were re-built in 2008.
The odometer reads 55,493. Is there any way to tell if this is the actual mileage? Can I trust this reading? Is it easy for a mechanic to simply wind an odometer back?
Thanks for your help!

yes an odometer can be tampered with.
What most likely happen is that the odometer rolled over past 100k and started back at 0. If the car really had 55k it would not have needed an engine rebuild under normal circumstances. So in your case true reading is probably 155,493.x

The mileage should have been on the title... or if you can get back copies of the title you might be able to track it that way. Other than that, look over the condition of the car, does it look like 55, 155, or 255?
Yes odometers of that time were easy to roll back. I learned how when I worked for an Oldsmobile dealer in the 80's. Just so, you know, we could tell if someone else had tampered with it... :-)

Normally if the unit has been rolled backwards, the numbers come up in red or are not centered vertically so no one does that, they just roll them forward. Look at the wear on the brake pedal. Does it look partially worn or fully smooth, a sign of high millage. Or have they been replace and look brand new? Check for carpet wear, a 53,000 mole car should not have heavy wear on the carpet unless it was under water. Sagging seat or a shinny steering wheel may tell you the millage is over 100,000.
In any case why do you care. The odometer is not a measure of the car. A 45 year old car with 150,000 mile in great condition is probably worth more than a 40,000 junker. Unless you have a service history you will never know, Carfax only goes back so far. Its all in the condition and if your are looking for a real investment in matching numbers.
