Most power out of a 302?
I'm trying to figure out how much power I can get naturally, no power adders (turbo, supercharger, nitrous) to go into my 66 mustang coupe. I have the block out of a 86 T-Bird, its getting machined. Trying to determine if stroking it is worth the cost/power difference. I'd LIKE 400whp. Car will have a C4, and a 9". Heidts 4-Link rear setup. Full tubular coilover front suspension. Custom built aluminum driveshaft. So my questions is...is 400whp possible? Or do I need to stop while I'm ahead and go find a 351?

My little 302 had 310hp to the rear wheels. Edlebrock heads, semi-mild 496/520 cam, Air-gap intake, Holley 670cfm and some Headman headers that matched up pretty good to the heads. There are better heads out there and you can get a higher lift, longer duration cam, as long as you have good springs in your heads to support the cam. You can port out your heads for more cfm as well. Not sure how much hp you can get. I only took mine to a dyno once to get my air/fuel mixture right in comparison to the hp. That little motor was very fun from 40-70mph and I could wind it up to almost 7k rpm. I drove my Mustang with that little 302 for eight years at about 12-13mpg, 19-20 hwy (5-speed).
In comparison, I built a 428 Police Interceptor and put it in earlier this year. I have not put it on the dyno yet but it has more power at 800rpm than my 302 did at 6500rpm. I can rip the tires free going 40mph in third gear. My track here is at 4500 feet above sea level and I can get down to the low 14s in that old car on a mildly built 428.
If you're just looking for power numbers and you have a choice, I would try out a 351w, bore and stroke it. Can get some decent heads, cam etc. for relatively cheap. Probably can make a decent 425ish hp to the crank motor but that would net you 350 hp to the wheels.
I googled a 400 hp 302 and a few were built but they are 400 hp to the crank not to the wheels. You can stroke a 302 to 347 and you can probably make 400-450 hp to the crank and again 350-375ish to the wheels. There are a few options out there.

A 347 can get 400 to the wheels if you throw enough money at it (which is really true of just about any engine). You just have to be willing to turn a little rpm with it. You could also get a Dart block and build a 363. A 351 based engine would be easier, like a 427 stroker.
Don't neglect chassis reinforcement at that power level though, subframes, torque boxes etc, or you'll just start breaking things.

As for the motor, I planned to just hone, and make sure the block is true. AFR heads, Voodoo cam, Procomp Manifold, Holley carb, JB pistons, Rods, etc...
I considered doing a 347 stroker. But as I said, if I'm better suited with putting those mods in a 351 then I guess I'll go that route.

I'm not lol. Not my first rodeo. Convertible floor, torque boxes, rocker, seat pans etc. Then a hoop in the back.
