Default Removing hurst shift lever from toploader

Can anyone enlighten me as to the proper steps to remove the hurst shift lever from the toploader? Or does the transmission need to drop down first? I can't seem to get the bolt to the drivers side far enough. Thanks

I managed to get mine on with the tranny in the car. Been a couple years, but I don't recall having any problems. Not sure which bolt you're talking about, but there should be enough clearance to remove the three bolts holding the shifter to the trans with the trans still installed.
