"GT" Paint Marking- Barn Find 66 GT Mustang Coupe
Hello All,
After reading about all the cool barn finds in Mustang Monthly, I was fortunate enough to find and buy a true rarity; A real deal 1966 Mustang GT Coupe that has been stored in a barn for over 29 years. A Code, Silver Frost with red interior. Its a Dearborn car and has the double VIN stamp too. Other than someone painting the car red back in the early 70s, everything is factory original (engine, trans etc.) and still has all the silver over-spray. Its truly a time capsule and a wealth of info as the car is really untouched and light in aspects of rust.
Using several online resources and the April 1995 Mustang Monthly issue (Article- GT facts, Fallacies, and Unsolved Mysteries) this GT has all the features to confirm it's true identity. However when I was going over the car I noticed what appears to be a factory marking on the front of the radiator core support that says "GT" on it. It would have been slightly visible with the front grill and fog lights on the car and I don't see this as an identifier in any of the resources I used. Has anyone else come across/ or knows if the factory did mark the GTs like this?

Yes I did notice the different valve covers, but wonder if these were put on from factory since it is a late build car (July 30 1966). however "289" is stamped on the heads and nothing else appears to have been touched on the car. Going to remove the starter to get the code off the block to confirm.
Restoring it should be fun. All the parts are there, and other than a fixable dent in the driver side door and some minor rust in the battery tray and drive quarter panel, there really isn't a whole lot to do (body wise). Just a lot of patients to make it look as if it just rolled off the showroom floor.

those valve covers never came on a 66 . there were 289's in early 68 that had them . there will be a date code by the starter and under the valve covers . there is a assembly date on a small pad on the drivers front of the engine below the head.

That looks like it could be a factory GT stamp. I'm no expert on the classics but I've taken apart enough new ones and have seen tons of marks like that. As it goes down the line some parts are identical no matter what trim package or features and some are unique to specific trim packages. So they scribe marks on the parts when they stock the shelves on the lines that way workers can grab them more quickly than searching for a part number. On the other hand junkyards sometimes do that too when they strip cars so they can inventory them. Honestly it doesn't really matter the only records those old cars had were drivetrain to body matching they didn't really start cataloging all the panels until chop shops became popular now they use it to tell if parts were chopped and then sold. (Take a look at you glass on a newer car most have a tracking number etched into them) And even then it's really only the high end or rare cars that get fully cataloged.

Make sure you check the cowl for rusted interior. It looks like there might be a lot of rust at the bottom of it. It will take some work to remove it and seal up the fresh air intakes but necessary if you are going to drive it in the rain.
Are you going to pull the engine to clean up the engine bay?

Thanks for all the info! Next week I will spend more time getting date codes etc. The 4bl car still has the tag on it which is correct for the car (C6ZF-B). The timing chain cover, and cylinder heads, and steering box are also correct for the car. So hopefully the block and trans check out which I am sure they do.
there are some more pictures attached. The cowl is super clean and shows very little signs of rust through/water damage. The floors are also solid with only surface rust on a few areas.
