Default Gas and brake pedals too close

Bought my wife a '68 coupe and am in the final stages of the rebuild and it seems the gas and brake pedal are way too close together. I've actually hit the brake and the gas at the same time trying to stop. Any suggestions? Is this supposed to have a straight up and down gas pedal instead of one that mounts on an angle? Attaching a pic (I hope) to show what it looks like. Thanks in advance for the help.

That appears to be stock.

Trade in those clod-hoppers you are wearing for some "penny loafers". No one wore big shoes in 68! Nike was a Navy missile and Ked High tops were the sneaker.

That's pretty much standard for an auto car. I have a size 14 so I have that issue with every auto I drive honestly. If it really bothers you you can heat the brake pedal mounting rod and bend it over slightly to give a little more room. Just be careful not to distort it to much because you will weaken it.

Seemed to close with only a half inch gap between the two pedals. Guess I'll just break out the torch and open up the space some.
Thanks for the input.

Worked out great but didn't have to torch it. A little extender and the pedal linkage bent easily. Centered between the hump and the brake now and a lot safer.
