Default want to put 289 parts on 302??

I have a 1965 mustang, coupe. Someone has taken out 289 and put a 302. 302 is a 1971 year.

I know internal parts are not enterchangable. I want to put 289 parts on outside of motor. Such as a 289, timing cover, water pump, Alt brackets, Distriburator, exhaust manifold?

Will these parts work on 302?

IIRC, yes. I think externally they are similar enough.

Different Rods, Pistons, Crank. I think in 68 ford used the 302 with 289 valve covers when they run out on the production line. If your 71 has passenger side water pump inlet you would be good there. the alt. brackets and timing pointer can be changed if the cover you have has the boss to drill out. Been a while so check my suggestions. Is the Timing cover you have got the Dipstick hole on the passenger side.

Waterpump on a 289/302 only has a inlet, the only outlet is on the intake. Ford had Two inlets, Passenger early and Driver later. heater hoses being the exception.
