Just for reference, I have a HV oil pump and see 65 psi on cold idle, 52 hot at speed, 30-35 hot idle.

Got the timing cover off and everything there looks good. Checked Cam shaft end play with timing gear installed on the cam and its between .004 and .005. Is this within spec? Almost too tight? I can clearly feel moment and the dial indicator shows .005

Cam end play is set by shims on the back of the gear correct? The shims ride against the cam retainer plate. With the cam gear off end play is like a 1/4" I assume this is normal.

I hope to get the cam out tomorrow...I gotta pull the intake and pull the lifters up into their bores to clear the lobes.

camshaft end play should be .005 to .008 so I think that's fine.

Alright so there it is.

Everything still looks great other than the cam gear its self.

The cam bearings look probably about like they did 50k ago. You can tell they have miles on them but still should be fine as far as I can tell the front one look like it has a little pit on bottom side about center. They are still silver in color (at lest for 98% of their surfrace area.) There isnt any significant amount of the copper color stuff showing through, They are smooth and I can't feel any left/right up/down play with the cam installed.

damn, wore it clean off. might be easier/cheaper to replace the whole cam instead of the gear on it ( if that's what you were planning )

time for a new cam...- and You don't want to hear this, but if the dist gear is showing any wear at all- I'd change it out as well. go new on both ends.

Oh yeah Im going to a composite gear. I think I found someone local who could probably get it on there.

The gear arrived today they look surprisingly frail even for a piece of somewhat plastic item. I can't Imagine it lasting more than 200 miles. Whatever...we shall see.

You might want to go for a new oil pump also. Can't imagine enough resistance in the distributor to cause that kind of wear.

Ill have the pan off so thats a good idea.
Any suggestions?
How much oil pressure does it really need? I'll shift at 6,200 a few times a week and sometimes it hangs out at 5,500 for 20 seconds or so.

Its not running for 30 to 75 minutes at 6k if its past 5,000 its just for a few seconds.
