Lightbulb 1967 Mustang 289 Rough/Surging Idle, Carbon/Fuel, and Black Smoke! Please Help!

Hey Guys!

My 1967 mustang has been parked for a while and has been driven once every couple of months/weeks. It would usually build up carbon and it would be cleared and everything would work fine after running it for a while.

However, I decided to clean and start using it regularly but once I decided to turn it on, I have been trying to figure out what is the issue here.

When I start the car and when its cold it idles fine and normal but there is some black smoke and black residue that shoots out from the exhaust. As the car warms up, it starts to idle rough or surges (it idles up and down constantly) but when I drive the surging stops but comes back when I stop. Also, when I press on the pedal and accelerate I can see a lot of black smoke from the exhaust behind me.

Do I need to replace the spark plugs? Clean or adjust the carb? Or what is the problem?

Thanks.

There could be a few issues there...It could be running rich that would explain the black smoke.

Do you see any fuel leaking from the carb onto the intake when its running?

I didnt check or look for that but I will.

The car has a 4160 Holley carb with an electric choke.. the car has been sitting for around 10 months....I ran some carb cleaner a couple of times and drove the car many times to let all of the carbon and deposits out. There has been a significant change and improvement, also I am going to replace the spark plugs and tune it up

The 4160 is easy to service...You can pull the front and rear float bowls off and service 90% of the carb right there without removing it from the engine. Clean the metering blocks and the inlet needles.

Thanks for that info Gun Jam....Should I order a rebuild kit for the float bowls to replace them after I clean as well?

there's not much in there...just clean it out. IF you can get the inlet needle to seat and it just floods then replace them
