Default T5 in a 65 with a 302

I have a 65 coupe with a 302 out of a 70s mustang with the original 3 speed manual. I want to swap either a 4 speed toploader or a 5 speed into it. Im wondering which is preferred first of all and what kind of tranny i should get as well as the modifications i would need to do. Thanks

I would go with the t5 because of the overdrive. I run a t5 in my 66 with 3.80 gears 4.11 gears would also be totally acceptable. I have the cobra spec T5 with the taller 5th gear .63 and at 80mph in turn 2500 rpm.

The Cobra spec and Z spec are most desirable they have the taller 5th gear and higher torque / 100,000 mile rating like 310 and 330 or something like that.
I think 93 is the cutoff year for them. they can be purchased used and rebuilt or new from a place like modern drive line.

T-5, beyond any doubt. Not quite as stout as the Toploader 4-speed, but must consider end use. The overdrive gear of the T-5 allows use of low gearing axle and still retains fuel economy. Either one fits up the shifter through the floor, and the 65 already has a hole there......
