Default door rod latch retainer question

I replaced the passenger door on my 66 mustang. All the parts are in good shape but I have 1 question: At the latch, where all the rods come together and snap in place with rod retainers (https://www.cjponyparts.com/cj-class...1966/p/HW1553/) does the outside door handle have a similar retainer? I could've sworn I had to remove one for the door handle and it broke off. So I bought that part (in the link) but it doesn't attach to where the outside door rod connects to the latch (into this part: https://www.cjponyparts.com/californ...1966/p/HW3082/). It looks like it would connect to all the other rods but not the door handle.

Am I doing something wrong? Or maybe does the rod slide into the bushing, with another washer over that, effectively locking in the rod? Thanks in advance.

Those connector locks come in left and right, you may have the wrong one.
