Default C4 Transmission oil pan

The transmission oil pan on my C4 transmission does not have a flat mating surface. At each of the bolt holes the metal is domed slightly. Should they be like this or has a previous owner overtightened the pan bolts and distorted the mating surface? Also I would normally replace a trans pan using just the gasket for sealing, in this case some type of gasket sealant has been used. Is this advisable?

Sounds like it's time for a new trans oil pan. Over torqued by previous install job, evidenced by the domed bolt holes. I would either by an upgrade or stock pan rather than use the old one again. I would put a new pan on without using RTV or sealant. Buy a new filter which usually comes with a gasket and do that while your in there. Proper torque is key to a leak free trans oil pan.

Default oil pan

I just used a round ball end of a ball peen hammer and supported pan with blocks of wood and tapped each hole. Then use a straight edge and adjust till its flat. Unless you got plenty of money then just buy new.

Default Transmission pan

I think my whole point was missed here. Sometime whipping out a few tools instead of your billfold can achieve same results. And you get the pleasure of knowing you did it yourself. Oh by the way my pan does not leak a drop.
