clutch confusion

Hey guys,
I have a 347 stroker and i am in the process of replacing the clutch. I ordered a motorsports 10.5 inch clutch. I was under the impression that is what size i was currently running. I was wrong. I have a 10 inch
because it was the original flywheel from my 66 289. so now the new clutch wont fit the bolt pattern for the flywheel I have. So i was thinking about purchasing a new billet flywheel.
I see they come in different weights. 24 lb, 25,lb up to 320 lb.....

what wight should i buy, or would i be better off just replacing the clutch with a 10 inch and not dicking with the 105. and the new flywheel.

The "weight" referred to is a BALANCE WEIGHT fastened near the outer rim of the flywheel. The first image shows the balance weight on a clutch-type flywheel. Second is for an automatic transmission. Two different weights were used, 28 INCH-OUNCES and 50 INCH-OUNCES, plus two different outside diameters, called out by NUMBER OF TEETH. Early 289 Mustang engines used 28 in. oz. and 157 teeth. Later used 50 in. oz. and 164 teeth. Count your teeth, carefully. If 157, see if a billet flywheel having 28 in oz unbalance and 157 teeth is available for 10.5 inch clutch. imp

I wasn't sure about flywheel weight. I ordered a 16 lb billtet flywheel with 280z balance weight with 157 tooth. But, Its for the 10.5 inch clutch rather than the 10 inch which was the spec for classics.

16lbs is a lightweight flywheel (aluminum) which is great if you're going for performance, but some people prefer steel for the street because typically it makes clutch engagement easier.

@imp it's important to correct that 164T flywheels came in 28oz imbalance as well. I believe for both 351's and for boss 302's 11" clutches and 164T flywheels were factory

This is true, and I have always lost track over the years just which engines fit what category. I ordered a '65 Mustang "K" model, 289 High Performance Option, in August, 1964. It took 5 weeks to get it. After many refinements and changes, I only yesterday learned that due to internal upgrades, such as the 3/8-inch rod bolts instead of 5/16, an "insert" having added balance weight was added. I never saw the part, but did recognize that the width of the crankshaft harmonic balancer was about twice that of the usual 289. It may even be that yesterday's search gave wrong info: the imbalance added was likely built-in with the wider balancer. And so it goes. imp

One must be aware that the actual WEIGHT of the flywheel is a separate issue from the imbalance (or, balance, if you prefer).

Hey, BTW, are all those moth-balled DC-10s that were stored at Goodyear Airport when I lived in the area still there? There were a bunch! imp

Imp

Those were not moth balled. GY airport is a maintenance facility fo many airline. A lot of those planes are owned by Lufthansa and there for service. They fly in and out often. Some of them are still there but they cycle them a lot.

not sure how long it's been since you were in the area. It has change an ass load in the last several years.

I went ahead with a lighter flywheel since I have a 347 that is 399hp and 440ftlbs of torque. I figured the torque would offset any issues.

Thanks for the GY info! I often went to a little gun show held in Litchfield, I think it was, when I lived around Baseline and 51st. Ave. Had a friend who got a job at Palo Verde building it, moved to B'eye. This all happened in the '80s. imp

It's a very different place now. I lived in west PhD in the 80s. There was almost nothing in goodyear and buckeye then other than farms. It's all homes now.
