The cushions sound like a good solution. I talked with Ford Customer Relations yesterday: Bill informed me that "yes", damage can occur from weight on the top when down and "no", Ford will not warranty this damage. I only asked about the '05-'08 models (sorry, I just didn't think to ask about all models) so I do not know if his answer is specific for these models only.

A custom bar I had the local welder fab up for me. It bolts to two iron plates I welded to the body under the rear seat, and slides into two telescope-type brackets we welded to the "B" pillar. It gets me through tech inspection at the track.
