Default Convertible Motor / Pump - May not be BAD! Here's the fix!

Hey all,

Have been asking lots of advice lately, figured since I finally have some good news, I might as well pass on what I learned.

I havea 94 vert that was sitting for a couple years. Old owner told me the top did go up and down, but when I tried it, all i heard was the clicking of the relay. Even posted on here saying it must be bad.

Spoke with a local top replacement guy about new vinyl and mentioned the motor / pump problem. He said, not it's probably not bad, it happens all the time. If it's not used often, you can get what's called VAPOR LOCK.

To fix Vapor Lock, simply have one person in the car manning the switch and have a second tap the motor (black motor side, not the resevoir side) and try the motor. After only a few taps BAM, the top started working just fine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah!!!!!!!!!!

Saved me at least $100!

Hope this helps those with this problem.

Jay

What sort of tapping do you mean? Just a light rapping or do you have to use something hard like a wrench to tap it? And do you have to have the motor "running" (or rather, trying to run) at the time?

It's probably as if your trying to start your car by tapping on the starter. One person taps, not wicked hard, but not wicked light..just tap, and the other trys to put the top down

Excellant Question.

As the other person said, you have to tap on it while someone is pushing on the switch. If your alone (which I was when it started raining one day), I had to stick a pen on the switch, with my briefcase on top of that holding it down. Didn't have a wrench, or hammer, so I took a rock (about a pound) and rapped on it litely. I would liken the force necessary to getting it to go as that of hammering a nail into dry wall, Nice and easy! Not hard, just tapping, little harder each time until it goes.

When I posted this, I thought it was a one time thing (since it was sitting so long), however, I have found it happens from time to time. I am guessing either the pump is going bad, or maybe air in the Hydraulic lines.

Anyone know of a way to bleed these lines (if they think this is the problem)?
