With the doors shut, the under dash courtesy light and the 2 lights on the rear view mirror do not go out.
I plan to unscrew the nuts on the door switched and pull the switches out and test them.
What else could be the cause?

On my 99, if I twist the light dimmer stalk think enough it will sort of click into a position where the interior lights stay on. Does your car have a similar thing which could be why yours do not go out?

yes, there is a courtesy light position on the light switch. It is in the "off" position.
I HOPE the problem is the door switches rather than the light switch.
