Default Red Paint - Can I sand it and clear coat it?

I also have a 1996 Rio Red Ford Probe.

The roof has oxidation making it look milky white, when buffed and waxed it looks good for about a week then the oxidation happens again.

What if I hit the car with 2000 grit wet sandpaper and spray a clear coat over it. Its just a daily driver and don't want to sink alot og money into it, just want it to look better.

My dad had a boat that had that same problem, we wet sanded it with 2000 then buffed it out and it looked great. I would not sand it with anything coarser than 2000 though, otherwise you may screw up your clearcoat.
