Hey James, here's hoping for the best for you and all of your compatriots in Iraq and elsewhere.

Here are 2 articles that I found extremely helpful in sizing wheels and tires for the 72 mustang. The first is specific to Mustangs but should more or less apply to Cougars as well (though I suppose the fender wells are a bit different between the mustangs and the cougars):

http://www.mustangmonthly.com/techar...7_inch_wheels/

Then if you really want to double-check everything and / or stuff in the biggest wheels and tires possible, here is a page that describes everything you need to check:

http://www.rsracing.com/tech-wheel.html

I referred to this page dozens of times when I was measuring for wheels and tires. I got my setup from mustangtuning.com, they will mount and balance a set of 4 wheels and tires for free and ship them for free as well, but if they don't fit... they won't take them back. So measure a dozen times, go off and think about it, then measure a few more times.

Best of luck...

I would think that any spacer more than 1" would be pushing it. The lug bolts for the 1" are long enough to cause stress on them as it is I would think. I am certainly no expert regarding this, but mechanically, it just seems a bit too much stress on the bolts.
