Default Audio Install

My friend and I have been putting a system into my dads 65 convertible. We're doing an alpine head unit, two bravox speakers in the kick panels, alpine amp and one 10 in subwoofer in the trunk. The head unit is goin in the glove box which has really turned out to be interesting haha. We ended up making a false floor in the trunk which looks great. If only there wasn't an ugly spare tire back there we could finish off the whole trunk in carpeted mdf board. My friend has also completely remade fiberglass kick panels by taping off the originals and fiberglassing over it. They look pretty good. We have to carpet a few more things, finish the head unit install and wire everything up and we'll be good to go.

Here are some pics of the install. http://s36.photobucket.com/albums/e2...oject/?start=0

Just wondering if you guys had any other ideas for speaker placement. With it being a convertible it really limits the area. It also has a center console. Thanks. Leave feedback or ideas on anything that could be worked on.

if space allows make a speaker mount and put it in front of the console, paint it body color and let it hold a small seaker and that will held get some sound out. or mount the tweeters under the seat facing forward! that will also get some good sound to you. it always hard to get good sound systems in muscle cars

Looks good, that glove compartment setup should look cool when you're done. Does the head unit have a remote? Trunk floor looks great too.

You can mount tweeters anywhere. The dash, a-pillars, center console, etc. I'm not sure if the 65's had them but my '67 came with a speaker mounted underneath the dash. Some people like to put them in the door panel too but I think it looks stupid personally.

Have you test fit the driver's kick panel to see if it's going to interfere with your foot placement?

Thanks alot for the feedback!
We've been working on this every day possible after school and on the weekends to get this done.
Yeah the final glovebox is going to be covered in black vinyl.
Yup has a remote to it which will def be nice
shr..thanks for the ideas...i thought about making a speaker rack to go behind the front seats assuming that my family isn't going to be taking this on large trips. Completely cover it in carpet and some make sure to put some grilles to protect the speaker.

Baddog....that looks really clean and I'm definitely giong to have to check out that idea. Thanks

James...Yeah we kind of guessimated where it's going to sit and really it isn't going to be terrible. Since it's auto I tend to have my left foot up near the seat if you can imagine that so it doesn't interfere at all. There is still room to stretch your leg out ~ 4-5 inches in between the speakers and brake pedal. We will have to relocate the headlight switch though.

There are a couple holes in the rear in between the rear seat and the trunk and we thought about putting maybe 2 four inch speakers facing forward to give the back some sound through the area where the convertible top is stored. I dunno tho

Any more suggetions would be great!

Thanks

I'm jealous. I have a '71 fastback and I bought some of those black ABS kick panels with the speaker provisions molded in already, but since I have a dang e-brake pedal I really can't use them. Got all kinds of rubbing going on with the pedal against the speaker part.

All your work looks great though. Keep it up

Looks like your on the right track. For the tweeters, i would definitedly recommend NOT mounting them on the centre console or centre dash. They need to be mounted as far as possible to the left and right. The best place I have found when doing show installs is in the kick panels. It would mean doing some more work on the ones you have made, but they need to be modified anyway. The 5"or 6" inch speakers you are using should be angled towards the listener as much as possible, and the tweeter should also be aimed at the listener. This helps to give the impression that the sound is coming from higher up, rather than your feet. Dont worry about rear speakers. If you get the fronts right, you dont need them. (exept for rear passengers, but who cares about them)

thats nice man. I do know how it sucks to install a system in a covertible. Im having that delimma with my dads 67 vert. My coupe however has a great stereo system. I got pioneer speakers in the kick panels, and 4x6 pioneers in the package tray behind the rear seat. I got two 12's in the back to pump out the bass. I do want you to know this however. If i had to remove speakers from my car, the kick panel speakers would be the first to go, i can hardly hear them and my backs pump out most of the mids and highs. It's just the placement of the kick panel speakers are not in a good place to hear them well.
