engine wont start

does any body know which way the dist. is supposed to point and where number one goes on the dist., i have a mallory unilite 37 series

With engineat tdc on #1 cylinder, stab dist. with rotor pointing at #1.

At TDC, the only thing you need to worry about is placing the number 1 wire on the contact the rotor is pointing to (more precisely, place the engine at 10*BTDC and point the rotor so that it is just starting to make contact with the contact inside the cap).
