Default Best $1200 spent?

Ok guys, so as you know I've taken some of the car apart. However I don't know where to start as far as ordering parts etc. I want to get it running before it looks good and I'm all about functionality > cosmetic. I have $1200 put aside to start her off. Any suggestions? I am new to the Mustang field and anyone with experiance in these classics would be greatly appreciated. I am not going for complete factory restore or collectors status. It will be kept in my family and I would like to build a 400hp-ish street machine with an occasional trip to the 1/4 mile. It will only come out on the weekends. Basicaly if someone could give me advice on HOW to build a 400hp+ car and what parts I will need. Of course as my budget expands so will the list of parts. Check out the New Member forums for updated info. 73 Mach 1 H 351C 2v 4bbl. Already have Holley high rise Carb and aluminum intake. 9" rear not sure gears. Thanks guys.

EDIT: Where do I find the gear ratios at?

If its still the one that came in it originally, you can find the gear ratio on the "tag" which should be attached to one of the 10 center retaining nuts.

How about new discs for a starting project?

Discs? You lost me. Sorry I really am as Green as they come when it comes to Stangs, Fords, and V8's. Never done any transmissions or gears/axles. Mainly worked on exhaust systems, turbo, and intake systems.

Disk brakes... to replace the drum brakes on the front. Its a good starting point along with safety. Allows you to stop safer and over a much shorter distance. Speed is all well and good however you want to focus more on safety, stopping, suspension, etc first. Then start work on making it go faster.

I agree on the brakes. If you want a fast car you need to be able to stop it. The drum brakes will heat up and fade out if you try to bring it down from a high speed. My 65 is to be an original not driven for performance or on a daily basis and most certainly not through the quarter mileso I stayed with the drums, but I know their limitations.

this talk about disk/drum brakes reminds me of my econ teacher this morning.

he was talking about how when we get real jobs and start our adult life we will have to maintain our cars and take it to get new front drums and calipers....LOL

He's probably just hoping one of you will buy his Gremlin. He's hoping to upgrade to aluminum block Vega. You other old farts will know what I'm talking about.

I thought to myself "disc brakes?" but didnt want to sound stupid. I honostly thought that the Mach 1 had discs in front drums in back....ok so just front discs or on all 4 corners? Of course engine compontents will come first, I need to go through everything I have this weekend and see what can be cleaned and put back together. So more on that later.

*Gulp* I looked up some Ford front disc brake conversion kits and they are $900! Is there any cheaper kits or can I get the set off a junk yard Ford? Possibly another mustang?
