Default 6or8?

have a 67 coupe 6cyl, 3 speed.what is the average gas mileage on a 6cyl stock motor?
What would it take to get it to run on E85? What is the comprisionon a stock 6 cyl and can it be raised if needed? Trying to deside keeping the 6 or putting the 302 in. Thanks.

To run e85 in anything with a carb you have to buy a special carb and its not cheap and i think you have to change out your rubber fuel lines for fuel injection rated ones.Talk to http://www.e85carbs.com/index.htm

First and foremost, I'm a diehard inline 6 fan and I alway encourage owners to give the six a chance. I've got a slightly modified 200 in my '65, Mild cam, headers, electronic ignition and Duraspark II dizzy from an '81 inline and then upgraded toan MSD box. Currently running the original head with an Autolite 1100 on midgrade with a 50 gap on the plugs. Last time I checked, I was getting 14 to 16 in town and 22 plus on the road. Personally, I would not even consider running E-85 in a vehicle that age. The wife put it in her '97 Explorer once and the drop in MPG ate upmost of thecost savings.

e85 has some downsides like less mpg then gas and if its colder then 30f its a real mother to get it to crank over and the price of a carb to run it.Id save up and get a over drive tranny and gear the rear end to match it might have to change it to a 8 inch tho not sure if they make gear sets for the 7.5 .

Thanks for your input. I plan to go ahead use the 6 cyl. for now. I do havea 302 to go in. need to focus more on brakes, suspension,Interior, and paint. Got this car as a one owner car from NC no rust very straight. but has no power brakes, no power steering, very basic coupe. My wife wants it as her daily driver. What basic up grades would you do on the suspension, steering and brakes. Never had a 6cly is there alot of up grade parts for it? But I do like the sound of flowmaster 302 eng. But having hot rods it's going to be fun to build a cruser. She wants to take it to Turkey Run this fall. Again Thanks for you input!

Go here for inline 6 parts - www.classicinlines.com

As far as the mods you mentioned; I wouldn't upgrade to power brakes or power steering. Not worth the trouble. You can upgrade to V8 manual steering and it will help a lot. I would go with disk brakes though, and like someone mentioned, upgrade the rear to an 8".

Here is a good article I found for you. In my opinion, if you really are worried about gas mileage on a classic car your priorities are messed up. No classic mustang will getthe kind of mileage todays 4 bangers get so unless you are doing a correct restoration drop in the 302. Much more fun to be had....

To run e85(which uses more fossil fuels to refine than does regular gas) you need higher compression pistons, a special carb, all new fuel lines w/out rubber seals, bushings, a new fuel pump, and a new fuel tank. Know that e85 is more expensive hard to find and gets worse gas mileage. EFI would be a much better solution to your problem such as the edelbrock kits for 302/351w and such.

thank you for bringing that up. not only that, but you get worse mileage and it causes the cost of food to go up...

There are much better options out there.

I would definitely stick with the 6. its not worth all the stuff you need to do to convert it.
