AOD
I apologize if this has been discussed before, but the search function doesn't want to find anything relating to "aod". I have an AOD out of a 90 Mustang that I am putting in my 71. Previously I had a Lokar setup on my 84 T-bird which was a column shift, the tv cable bolted to the trans pan and pulled the tv towards the back of the car (lever pointing down, shift lever pointing up). On the Mustang AOD, the tv bracket points upward and the shifter bracket points down, exact opposite of the T-bird. First, is there any issues hooking up the shift linkage, such as where is park on the detent forwards or backwards (detent pointing down)? Second, I dont have a clue how to hook up the cable to pull the TV lever forward, I cant swap the tv lever to the down position, it will interfere with the shift lever. There really is nowhere to bolt the cable bracket to. Anybody have any pictures of how they did theirs? This was much easier the first time I did this. I think I am probably looking at making a custom bracket.
The lever gets pulled forward with floor shift. It is reversed from column shift. The bracket gets mounted just above in front of the corner of the fluid pan.
Here is a pic I have of mine. It is accressed through my business web site

Maybe you can answer a question I have. If you look at the second pic you see the lever mounted that came with my lokar kit. Does this look right to you. I don't think it is correct and I havent driven it above 25 mph and a very short disance because I don't want to burn the tranny.

So do I need to flip my shifter lever and tv lever around (shifter up, tv down)? I wasn't sure if that was right, but I am beginning to think thats what I have to do.
As far as you second pick, I am surprised it isnt binding or hitting the shifter lever. On my Bird, the tv lever pointed down and bolted to the trans using one of the pan bolts.

I believe you are supposed to flip it up so that the tv cable pulls it counter clockwise like it was pulling it for the column shift. The lever does clear the shift lever but I keep thinking that the lever is laying too far backward to work properly
Here is something I found tonight that may help

The Mustang setup is correct for your app. The gear selector is pointed down for floor and up for column shift. The shifter you buy will be for a floor shifter. You will have to buy a kit with the shifter to make it work properly with an AOD and you will notice that they all come with a new lever to change the orientation if its pointed up.
wait a minute here, buy a new shifter? that was not in the plan, I want to use the stock shifter if at all possible, and have no worries about needing a modified shifter rod to connect to the AOD. I can modify my stock rod if need be unless there is something about the geometry of it that needs to be changed, I have yet to find that info. Further reading on this subject leads me to believe that the lever in forward position is park, with the lever pointed down, would be opposite of what my shifter would be. yes or no? The internet is great, until you cant find what you need!

... seems like there is often a lot of mis-information on this ... over and over again ...
I have converted my car to AOD using the stock floor shifter.
.... with this configuration you must flip the shift lever and the AOD lever.
Shift lever is on top ... AOD lever is on the bottom and pulls towards the rear.
Search ... and you will find this information repeated in many places:

... thought I read that if you use a cable shifted aftermarket shifter, you don't have to flip the levers (makes sense)

thats what I thought, but wasnt sure, I have seen pictures with the shifter lever pointed down, so there must be some other mod they are not showing to make it work. I have been searching the net like crazy, maybe I just didnt use the right keywords!
I installed a cable shifter and the cable mounts from the back of the tranny. still had to point the shifter up and kickdown cable down. Using the stock shifter youll have to make your own shift linkage or modify the existing. flipping the levers is a piece of cake. I beleive B&M has a good how to.
