Default A question about 1 chamber mufflers.

I currently have the flowmaster 40's which are 2 chamber on my car, they are dumped. I went to the muffler shop today and asked what would make my Mustang the loudest it could be, I was told that the flowmaster 30's (I think it is, may be 10) they are 1 chamber, and he tells me with a 3" dump, I dunno what it is dumped at right now, that it would be the loudest possible.

Anyhow, I took a look at these 1 chambers and the muffler is really really tiny, no biggie, I was just wondering going with this 1 chamber setup, would I gain or lose HP/torque, or would it have no affect, I was just wondering, this would be the determining factor, b/c the louder the better!

10:00 on a Friday night, you roll past the local mall parking lot where a bunch of ricers are hanging out. You drop the hammer and light up their world, then just keep cruising. 10 minutes later your face down in the street with a 250 lbs Gorrila named Officer Sputnick's size 13 boot in the middle of your back.
The tow trucks coming and you are looking at $100.00 to get it out of impound and a piece of paper that reads you gotta get some real mufflers on and pay "The Man" a nice little fine.

So I ask, What's more important. Sparing yourself the humiliation of explaning the rasberry on your cheeks to your freinds or running around in a crappy running loud a$$ punk mobile?

Two things really **** me off. Punk a$$ 5 Megawatt stereos, blasting nothing but bass, and cars with crappy exhaust.

...Actually three things Harleys with punk a$$ loud exhaust.

All three things tell me the guys nothing but a poser.

It aint about loud. It's about tuning the exhaust system to match the engine.

Even race tracks have max decibel testing.

Sorry, not to burst your bubble, but I have 3" Flowmaster 30's, and they are NOT loud. I have 2.5" pipe also, you don't need 3" pipe, it will do you no good what so ever. I got away with Cherry Bombs for over a year without the Cops saying a word, but I live in a small town, so the Cops all know my car is up to speed.

Hey Scott, I dare ya to walk up to one of those "poser" Harley riders and say that to his face. Sometimes being loud can work to your advantage, as in the case of Harley riders. I bet you hear them a long time before you see them.

Ooooh a real dare!!!! Reminds me of grade school. [sm=icon_rofl.gif]
Dude you can't go through life afraid to talk to people... well maybe you can, but I won't.

As to Loud exhaust which is more on topic. Loud for the sake of loud can actually cost you power. A street oriented engine needs a certain amount of backpressure based on engine/drivetrain and driving style. Just dumping 3" exhaust at the rear end, can actually cause loss of power and higher engine temps.

As for loud exhaust on bikes, you need to read the NHTSA information on the subject. Loud exhaust does not save lives. That's a dangerous thing to be saying.
Defensive riding, taking nothing for granted, riding within your skills, and staying within speeds that are safe for the existing conditions, are examples of things that will help. Ultimately it comes down to chance, and that's from over 20 years of personal experience.

2.5 exhaust ought to be good for at least 500hp. Any more pipe than that is just a waste, not counting trying to fit it to the car. Get an X or H pipe with some cool sounding mufflers, and you should be good to go.
