I think that it is very possibly going lean, and you are hearing detonation. (pinging) Is higher octane gas or racing gas avalible to you? That's a fairly simple way to tell if it is detonating on you; the better fuel should make this sound go away if it is pinging. I'd be very careful, if I were you.

The spark plugs need to be autolite #24's @ .048 gap.
Or Autolite #25 @ .051 gap
The lower the # the colder the plug.
