What you can "squeeze" on your rim isn't necessarily what you should do, especially for safety reasons. According to tire manufacturers, the largest tire you are supposed to mount on an 8" dia rim is the stock 245/45 tire (17"). Anything above that will call for at least a 8.5" rim up to a 10" dia. I am sure you wouldn't want to be tooling around a hairpin corner at an elevated speed and have your tire(s) suddenly break their bead and dismount. Not a pretty sight. Go to www.tirerack.com and check some of the spec charts on different tires and you will see all the recommendations for any given tire. Two things to look at are revs per mile and wheel diameter size. Revs per mile of any custom sized tire you consider should be as close as possible to your stock rubber revs so your speedometer does not get totally frogged up.
