ive actually heard if youre accelerating to pass someone or something that downshifting into a lower gear will actually be better gas mileage cuz its less work for the car. if you floor it in 5th to pass youre just wasting gas. i dont know how accurate that is, but its what ive heard. but just cruising around...yea lower rpms are better. but not TOO low...cuz then its extra stress on the car.

I always thought it was relative....more of a relation to how much the throttle is open than it is related to the actual RPMs of the engine...so i think it would be possible to get better mileage by staying in the powerband, or having higher RPMs...

but also, if you're in too low of a gear, it will hold you back too. I think 4th gear is about right for cruising around where I live (usually stay ~50-55 mph). Before this thread, I believed that it all depended on RPM's. But now, I see that it makes sense and mostly all depends on how much of the pedal you're giving it.
