ORIGINAL: Car_Ramrod

ive actually heard if youre accelerating to pass someone or something that downshifting into a lower gear will actually be better gas mileage cuz its less work for the car. if you floor it in 5th to pass youre just wasting gas. i dont know how accurate that is, but its what ive heard. but just cruising around...yea lower rpms are better. but not TOO low...cuz then its extra stress on the car.
true.. because if i wanted to pass you in 5th, i would pretty much have to floor it for about 10 seconds before i would be up to speed to pass. but if i shifted into 2nd, and floored it (gave it the same amount of gas as in 5th) then i would be in front of you in about 2 seconds. But if you want to keep your gas mileage up, just take note at how much you have to press the pedal. Accelerate slowly, pressing the pedal lightly, and shifting at about 2,000 RPMs... but cruise fast enough to allow you to put the car in 5th gear, even if your only at 1,300 RPMs, just dont press the gas hard at this speed.

I always thought it was relative....more of a relation to how much the throttle is open than it is related to the actual RPMs of the engine...so i think it would be possible to get better mileage by staying in the powerband, or having higher RPMs...

but also, if you're in too low of a gear, it will hold you back too. I think 4th gear is about right for cruising around where I live (usually stay ~50-55 mph). Before this thread, I believed that it all depended on RPM's. But now, I see that it makes sense and mostly all depends on how much of the pedal you're giving it.
