regular/synthetic??? fact/myth? wtf??
OKay I have heard from so many people about the synthetic lubricant and regular lubricant for your vehicle. I have heard people say you can't go from synthetic to regular, you can go regular to synthetic... .some say if you switch your engine will blow shortly.... Ijust put mobil 1 synthetic ATF in my trans and it LOVES it...
I want to know if it will hurt my engine at all to go from valvoline max life to valvoline max life synthetic after i run this case through it....
i'm just so confused! need the facts, i've always thought oil was oil and you just have different quality levels

Switching from petrol oil to a full synthetic depends on your specific situation. How many miles do you have on the motor? Does it burn any oil now? Has it been babied, or run hard? Basically, switching over MAY point out leaks, loose clearances, etc if your motor is older, with lots of hard miles on it. I don't see a problem with running good, petrol oil in a street motor, with frequent, regular oil changes.

she has 111000 on it and burns a little bit. that's why i'm running the max life. I have a feeling it's the stupid valve stems because compression is perfect and it runs great. I figure I'll just keep running the best regular oil for this engine... my next engine however will get synthetic

THe thing I've heard most is,, you shouldn't be constantly switching from one to the other regularly, like some people have the bright idea of using synthetics in winter only then back to mineral in summer, and I would agree to that (meaning it is NOT a good idea).
I think the bottom line is because the two don't mix well to each other, and during an oil change there still is quite a bit of the old oil lurking in the crankcase to welcome the new oil lol.
