If you had a goal for high 10's low 11's (or 550rwhp) what engine would you start off with. Smog doesn't mean a thing. Any engine would be blessed with boost or nitrous.

a 306/331/347 5.0 with all the goodies
a 351w/396w/408w 5.8 with all the goodies
a 4.6 sohc (stock heads)
a 4.6 dohc (stock heads & cams)

The reason I ask this dumb question is because I gave up my quest for a Cobra mustang (96-98) for an older 60' coupe. I found one in mint condition for a reasonible price plus I'll still have upwards of $5-6 thousand to do anything with.. I would rather build a FI engine instead of a CARB. to be different and have the "OH ****!" factor. This isnt going to be a month project, closer to a year if that if the car works out. But since I dont have the car now I'm not going to mention any more of my dreams just yet.

I know there isnt anything called a CHEAP race car, but what if you had a choice to choose your next build.. What would it be? I know if I pick anything above it would work no matter what. But what would be easier to work on, OEM & AM parts, cheaper (As in buying heads for a 5.0 compaired to keeping the stock 4.6 heads, that saves 1k right there) In my mind right now I'm thinking about a sohc motor since you could find then easier then a dohc, plus they could make good power like anything else...

Okay guys what would you pick... Sorry for such a newb. post but I'll like some opinions. Kenneth.

there is a post here about nice engines. its pretty recent.

https://mustangforums.com/m_1194654/tm.htm

Check that out. The company sells a 427 capable of 550 hp on pump gas. It around 6,000 dollars. Cheap as hell for that power.

From what I hear the company who builds the engine is very reputable.

good Luck with your search

I would stay away from a 427... A 408 w/ a 200 shot of gas is the ticket for the times you seek... but its all gonna cost you more than 5 or 6K... an remember suspension, etc...

http://www.mustangandfords.com/techa..._428_windsors/

There's an article about the 427W vs the 428 FE

With edelbrock heads and a cam, both of them put out over 500 hp (if you slap a roller cam in there... which it comes with, so no biggie)

Throw a 100 shot on there, or you could even boost it if you want, and you got yourself a 550 horse+ (to the wheels) machine.

I would go 408 for the HUGE displacement or the 4.6 DOHC because it is a great engine. I kinda like the 408 better esp. in an older car.
