Default 1997 auto 3.8L transmission trouble

This mustang is in good shape but it shutters when switching from 3rd to 4th. I'm told that this can be caused by using the wrong trans fluid (ie. not mercon V). Can anyone tell me if this is the likley problem and if there is any way to check if the correct fluid is already in the transmission? I'm trying to avoid having to change the fluid and test it as i dont own this car yet. Any input would be great.

I cant sell it because I have not bought it yet. Funny you should mention the GT as I just found a guy selling a 97 GT for $4500 CND.(Never Winter Driven) have not seen it yet though as its a fair distance away.

It's a very good possibility. There is a big diference between Mercon and Dexron. Dexron is a thinner grade. You can do serious damage to the pumps inside the tranny with the wrong fluid.

Torque converter shudder....its extremely common on ford transmissions. Usually having the fluid changed will take care of the problem. The problem started on my 94 at 100,000 miles, i'm up to 170,000 and as long as i have the fluid changed on a regular basis the problem never shows up.
