Default How much slack in rear end is normal?

I was messin around yesterday and i was pullin in and out on my rear wheels and i was hearin a slight clunkin noise. So I jacked up the rear end thinking that my lugnuts were loose, they were tight so i watched even closer and noticed that when u push and pull on the wheels the axle moves in/out maybe 3/16"to 1/4" at the most. Does it on both sides. Im gettin the rear rebuilt soon anyways, but im wondering is this normal? I jacked up the rear on my ranger and the axle moves in/out but a little less. BTW It's a 91 GT 5.0 5 speed.
Thanks.
