Changing 15" rims to bigger size
I currently own a 97 mustang LX with after market american racing rims. They are currently size 15" x 7and I was wanting to upsize them to replica bullitt rims that are 17" x 8. I mentioned this to one of the car repair guys at the dealership the last time I was getting my car looked at and he told me that it would be a bad idea saying that basically it wouldn't work. So what I want to know is if anyone else has upsized their rims and what problems have occured/ changes that have to be made to like the speedometer and such.
Thanks for the help.

You will be fine. If you keep the overall diameter relativly the same, you won't have to change anything.

ok according to that calculator the tires i am looking at are 5.49% diameter difference it says the speedo difference with be 5.8 too slow. would this be a big deal to not calabrate it yet or will it make a huge difference?

5.8 mph too slow would be worth fixing. In general, 1 tooth on your speedo gear is equivalent to 3mph. And your computer does use this input for engine management as well, so it's worth keeping your speedo accurate.
As for the upgrading from 15" rims to 17" rims, it is worth noting that the overall diameter of Mustang tires hasn't changed a whole lot in its lifetime. My '71 came with basically 25.6" tall tires...the same as my '03, and the same as the 5.0L Mustangs. The exceptions are the Mustang II with its shorter tires and the '05+ Mustangs with their taller tires.

Yes, but they'll be a taller tire than you have now.
The '06 GT comes with 235/55-17 (27.2" tall) while your 2000 V6 had 205/65-15 stock (25.5" tall). You'll just need to have your speedo corrected by about 4 mph (@58mph on your speedo, you'd be traveling about 62).
