Default Headlamp upgrade on 1967 Coupe - problems

I just upgraded my headlamps to Hella bodies and 9003 lamps (H2B made in Germany it says on the bulb) these are 55/60Watt bulbs, same as the rating on the original sealed beams. The lights now come on and off randomly, faster with the brights on. It does this sitting in the driveway with the engine off too!! I'm an electrical engineer, so I know that if the wattage is the same, the current should be the same. I don't smell anything funny coming from the dash, so I'm assuming the switch is OK. Is it possible that it just "wore out" after 37 years??? HELP!!

thats kinda strang have you checked the headlight switch.

the only thing i can really think of is you may have distrubed some of that 37 year old wiring.

i know on my 64 fairlane every time i look at the wiring wrong i spend two days chasing gremlins.

YUP. New headlight switch did the trick. Nice to be able to SEE at night!! The brights are incredible. Bet I can see 3/4 of a mile on flat road!

Also, another tip for upgrading, use some Bosch relays for your headlights. Ford sends all of the current through the headlight switch, which has a large amount of resistance. If you use a relay, and the headlight switch as the signal, run power directly to the hot side of the starter selenoid, you can pick up a good amount of light, and put less strain on the headlight switch.
