Is it normal to hear a ticking sound when the AC is on???

The compressor will cycle on and off while the AC is on...

The pressure drop that it is fighting is a function of how much heat it is removing. If it is cool, it won't have to work as hard to cool the coils (remove the heat). If it is hot, it will have to work harder...

Then there is the issue of RPM... as the engine turns faster, it is easier for it to compress so it disengages once it reaches its desired pressure.

Short answer - Yes but they should be well spaced (not tick,tick,tick, but tick.... lots of time, tick)
