Default 98 GT Fuel Filter change

Ok guys,
Just tried to change the damn thing and couldn't get the fuel lines off of the filter after removing the steel spring clips. Is there a spring inside the coupling that needs to be expanded so the line slides off the filter?

Also, was trying to change filter due to car bogging between 1K-2500 RPM. Was running great, gassed car up at Chevron, then started having a bogging problem. Doesn't do it when the car is cold, just when it reaches normal temp. I did notice a smell from the car the day it started acting up. Like the car smelled hot, but the temp was ok. People have suggested the IAC valve, also the 02 sensors...... Car has 92K miles on it. Just changed the intake manifold due to leaking. Car was running great for about 300 miles, then started acting up as I described.
Any advise would be much appreciated.

Yes, you need a special tool. It can be had from Auto Zone. I would recommend the one that also has sizes for A/C lines, that way you don't have to buy another one. I'm not sure bout your other problem though.
