I know both of them have their strong suites. I have owned a 4.6 Thunderbird and I did notice that the 4.6 was lacking on low end torque. I have driven a few 5.0L and they seemed to have a lot more down low...

anyhow...

what the opinion on each and which would you buy and why? I am seriously about to buy a 94 Cobra if the details on the car are to my liking.

Well there are different 4.6s in use but a few things to keep in mind...

5.0s have more low end as you have noticed
5.0s are MUCH cheaper to mod and theres alot more available for them (ever search ford 302 in jegs????)
4.6s BLOCKS are good for more HP (so I am told)

People say the 4.6 is more friendly to being a daily driver, especially when compared to a Carbed 5.0 (or any carbed engine haha)

Or are you talking about a DOHC 4.6? SICK

what are you looking for in this car? Like a daily driver or a weekend beast

not sure on the 5.0, but 500 HP on a stock 4.6 is pushing it

I am talking about a Cobra 5.0 compared to a GT or Cobra 4.6....

I am on a limited budget so I am talking about a 90's car mainly 94-98 in any of the versions.

I am not looking for a monster as its going to be my daily driver but I dont drive much at all. I have owned a SOHC 4.6 but not a 5.0

The car I am looking to buy has a rebuilt 5.0 with work to it so its stronger than stock 5.0.....

I knew parts were easier to come by for 5.0 ....wondering about everything else like problems....durability.....

I just wondered since I havent owned a 5.0 personally but I have driven them at work...


I am selling my Stage 3 90 300zx w/58K because I just cant get over wanting a Cobra or GT so...I am looking for one but budget is about $6K max...I figured I can work on the Cobra a little easier than the 300ZX . I have dont a lot of work on the 300ZX but if I had to bust into the motor then I dont think I would be able to and parts for the Z isnt cheap...so I want to get a GT or CObra...


sorry for all the bs ....I am generally new to the stang and havnt owned my T-Bird inb about 4yrs now so I have been out of touch with the Ford community

5.0 motor is bullit proof, 4.6 ehh not as much so, but 5.0 cobras have 240 HP, 4.6s have 305

well the Cobra I am looking at is not stock and motor is not either so it should be closer to 4.6 power wise.

As long as the engine was done right, should be a great car. I had 5 different 5.0 mustangs, and never had any mechanical problems with any of them.

if youre going to get a 5.0, get a foxbody, they're light as hell

I already bought a 5.0 94 with 5K on the motor with some work done...its not a matter of choosing a car I was just asking about the differences of the 2 engines
