A pulley would show wear rather quick and easy if that were the problem.

You did bring up great points, but burning oil has a very distinct smell and even just a little drop of oil makes for a nice smoke show.

I'm gonna have to say its most likely the clutch your smelling.

me too. if you're hitting it from a roll, dump it. if you're going from a dead stop, release it fairly fast (or dump it, but thats not what id do).

I feather my clutch all the time and I never get the burning smell of a clutch. Maybe im doing something right.

I just rev it to 1500 max and dump the clutch! Thanks to 4:10s that is

does it smoke out the exhast when you run it hard as hell ,,is it using oil????

I would first make sure to cover all the basics - make sure you have the right type of engine oil, that you're not low, and that youve changed it regularly. Then see if your radiator fluid is up to par. I've had that burning smell come through my A/C, and although I cant figure out what it is, there doesnt seem to be a problem with the car.
