Do you know who sells the rebuilding kit ?
I had asked the auto part store that checked the alternator and they said that they no longer carry parts for alternators only replacements.

Pep boys used to carry kits in a bubble pack. Voltage regulator, bearings, brush kit, stator assembly, and diodes. If they dont' have it, then you definitely want to just get a new one and be done with it.

IT sounds like your alternator is going bad but it works some of the time, if it was tested when it was acting right it might test good.
The problem with autozone testers it it takes both the tester, and someone with comon sense to do the test, just becuse it does not say bad does not mean it is good, maybe it was only putting out 7 amps when your car requires 150 yes it is charging at 7 amps but no the alternator is not good!
if you replace the alternator and still have this problem, it can only be the battery, if it was a wire or a short it would be blowing fuses, if it was a broken wire it would not be an off on problem and it would never have been able to be tested plus the battery would drain !!!!
it is not worth rebuilding, you can swap brushes and voltage regulator, but you cant get the bearings or other internals..

The initial problem was in part that the place that I went to have the problem diagnosed and repaired did not find the alternator faulty. This sort of convinced me not to have them work on my car. There aren't that many places willing to deal with after market warranties.
The warranty does not pay much in terms of diagnostic time so I set out to try to find the problem myself so I could just have them replace my alternator.
Today I found a local Midas Muffler shop that will replace the alternator thru the warranty. I could do it myself but I rather not incur the expense.
Should it turn out to be something else at least I'll have an alternator.
Hopefully tomorrow it will be fixed.

Just wanted to first thank you guys for all the great advice
I brought the car in early today and they replaced the alternator with a rebuilt one. My extended warranty picked up the tab.
Ran some errands and have not seen the light on nor the voltemter dip.
