Default Mustang motor in Mercury

I have a 85 Mercury Cougar that I am trying to put in a 79 mustang motor. I think it is from a mustang, not to sure. I am wanting to keep all the emission pumps. When I put the Alt. and smog pump on with the Mercury brackets the belts didn't line up. The crank sits about a inch in from the others. Does anyone know if the mustang bracket is thinner then the mercury one. Or am I going to have to really do some work and get some custom brackets made up? Please help me am I not to sure which or what is going to be easier to do.

What size is the engine? Can't you just use the Cougar brackets if the engine sizes are the same?

They are both 302's. I can't use the cougar bracket the alt and smog pump stick out about an inch from te crank. The water pump on the new motor use a serpentine belt and the old one is a v belt.

Oh yea right you're going from a V belt engine to a serpentine.. I dunno what you can do,, but how about using ALL the accessories (alt, smog, steering pump, etc) from the donor Mustang & stick it ALL into the Cougar?
