What exactly do sway bars do?

Ok i have a 99 V6 convertable, and i am looking into lowering it. Probably with the Eibach Pro Kit. I was reading some of the other posts and they mentioned the sway bar. What does it do, and should i look into getting one?

A metal bar connecting the left and right suspension systems at the front of you car, used to stabilize the chassis against sway.

You've already got a stiff ass factory sway bar on the front of the car. Probably have one on the back as well - at least the GT's do.
