Police Speed

Okay, so just how fast can cop cars go?

I'm talking more along the lines of state police...the crown vics...

They've got good power, but are kinda heavy so that cancels eachother out a bit. Are you asking how fast a cop car is capable of going (absolute max speed), or how fast cops are allowed to go? They're probably not allowed to go flat out because that'd be too dangerous to themselves as well as other bystanders

I had a Lincoln MK VIII that would easily do 135.It shifted into overdrive at 125.It was still accelerating past 135 when I had to let off because of no more suitable road. That was with a chip and the speed limiter removed. It was also getting squirrely in the handling dept.
Since the MK VIII had the 4 valve engine rated at 280 HP,I'm going to say a Crown Vic with the 2 valve 4.6 should be able to get to 120 fairly quickly and 130 eventually.
Since you did ask about the cop version I might add that radio waves travel at the speed of light.

Actually, radio waves are slightly slower then light. :)

I guess the bottomline is you can out run the cop, but not the radio...;)

well stated....i think that may be right, if the
radio waves are measured within the earths atmosphere and
the light is measured in the (near) vacuum of space :)

Before I retired (over 6 years ago) we were assigned "Support Cars" It was mine to maintain and drive home every night. I was the only one who drove it. I took it to the city garage for regular maintenance. A lot of the guys had their cars tweaked & you would be surprised at what they were capable of. My Unmarked unit for the last 6 years on the job was a 5.0 Mustang. One of 30 recovered in an auto theft investigation. The Vins were gone and they could only be titled to a government organization. They had to be destroyed when we were done with them. We had marked 5.0 mustangs for traffic...

The bosses didn't appreciate the humor when I showed up with this in the mid 80's. Wheels came off a Corvette that I was restoring..

A State Trooper that I've known most of my life told me 138 without the lights on top and 130 with the lights on top in the Crown Victoria...this was about 8 years ago. The new Chargers SUPPOSEDLY can make 150, but this is only hearsay. As stated earlier though, we can't outrun the radio.

Shortly after I bought my '90 CHP and before the mods, I ran it up to 135mph with plenty more left to go in 5th if thats any help... I know it's an older car but I'm guessing the requirements of what they need to do is the same...
