ALTERNATOR

What direction does the nut on the pulley of the alternator go. I've tried both ways and have had no luck getting it off.
Secondly, I was thinking of replacing the alternator. I have a couple of guages, do you think I need a upgrade to a 170 amp from the 130 amp. pa performance had a 130,170,200,I don't want to fry my cars electrical, any advise or is a upgrade even neccessay ??

RE: ALTERNATOR

Are you using an impact wrench? It's almost impossible to remove the nut without one. It's a standard threaded shaft (if the pulley were to slip, it'd tighten the nut instead of loosening).

Depends on how many electrical items you intend to run on if you need a larger alternator. Unless you have a larger stereo, or other non-stock items, stick with the stock size.

RE: ALTERNATOR

If you have an old serpentine belt or are replacing the existing one you can put it around the pulley so you can lock vise-grips on it. That will stop the pliers from scratching the pulley. You have to place the alternator on the floor and step on the vies-grips and use a breaker bar on the nut. That's how I got mine off! It was a bitch, but I did that and it was fairly simple. (vise-grips are locking pliers!)
