2005 4.6 in a '97 GT?
Stating to think about a significant power upgrade, and can't help but wonder if a 2005 + 4.6 will fit my '97 GT with out much hardache (disregard hood closer issues!)??? How about a 2003 4 valve or even a basic 2003 4.6? Anybody have any knowledge in this arena? Does this sound too far out there, or should I just stick with looking for PI heads etc?
Thanks in advance,
Troy

All depends on how deep your wallet is. If you have the $ definalty the 03 DOHC. I know people have put the 05 and up 3V in older cars but I have not seen a cost break down but I would assume that would be 2nd in terms of cost. Or you can get any 99 up 4.6 and be PI. And probably the cheapest is to just do a PI head and intake swap.

The biggest headache for any of those swaps would be the computer and wiring harness. Aside from that, it's a bolt-in.

Thanks for the help guys. So, if I can get a hold of an '05+ or a 99+ 2 or 3 valve motor, it will just bolt right in? I know that exhaust and drive line will need mods, but if the donor came with a complete harness/ecu and all, is ita "backyard" install?
I have found a couple prospects for under $3k complete, and my thinking is I would rather dump in 3-4k in this setup than PI heads and a baby blower.
What are the professional's opinions here???
Again guys, thanks a million!

If you can do all the computer and wiring work then go for it. If not then it is going to cost more to swap the engine in than it would for a PI swap and a nice blower. You will make way more power with a PI swap and blower than you will with the swap too.

I guess that is kinda what I am looking for...reliability and a little more go power. So, just a 4.6 from 99+ will work? any benifits for diff years? again, will the cobra heads fit (easily)?
As a side note, with a PI swap and a blower, what's the best gears? Got 3.73 now, wanted 4.10s. How rough at 80 mph are they??? ie gas and rpm.
Thanks once again...this really is helping.

btw, for a PI swap, I need heads, cams, plenum, and TB right? Is that all?

I just read this in the March edition of MMFF, you wont beable to use 4V cobra heads on a regular 4.6... there is too much work involved adapting the 2V block to a 4V engine. if you wanted to go that route, then you should try to find a cobra motor.
I dont know anything about a PI swap except that I think all mustangs after 99 were equipped with PI heads....
I'm more of a 5.0 guy, but that is the extent of my knowledge of 4.6 motors
hope that it helps you out.

Your best bet is if you want 4V heads is to buy a 4V engine don't buy a 99 up 2V and than try and swap 4V heads on to it. It can be done but just isn't cost effective.
As far as gearing goes your not gonna feel a very big difference because you already have 3.73's I believe 80 mph is around 2750 rpm's but it's been 2 month sense I've driven my car so I could be a little off.
